Alexander the Great is believed to have seen robes of gold and purple on Eastern nobles. Later Roman writings refer to clothing being woven with gold thread. During the Middle Ages in Europe, church leaders and nobility used gold thread and embroidery on their clothing and certain ornamental decorations. In fact, historians believe that the use of gold in clothing was carried from the east to the west.

Most gold used in modern clothing is for military or religious use. Gold embroidery and thread can also be found in theater costumes.
